Character Profiles. (Nintendrone)

Character: Mario
Status: Veteran
Skill Level: Beginner
Brawl Tier Prediction: High

With his familiar red cap, blue overalls and bushy mustache, the world-famous "Mr. Video Game" is about to set foot on the Smash Bros. stage for the third time.

An easy-to-use character, Mario sets the standard for balance.
He overwhelms opponents with magnificent jumping action!

Easily the most famous Smash Bros. character, Mario is going to be much more than iconic beginner-trash this time around. My main character since Smash 64, Mario is easy to work with, and stylish in approach. In Brawl, some notable improvements include a faster fair, better combo ability, and improved edgeguarding technique. His tornado has become his dair, replacing his meteor smash, and has been replaced by FLUDD. FLUDD takes time to charge, and is difficult to control, and so far has posed more of a problem to use than potential to be worth using.

Final Smash: Mario Finale: You know how Mario can shoot little fireballs out of his hand? Well, imagine that, but a storm of it covering the whole screen. It's a tad on the slow side though...

Favorite Move: Dsmash (aka Breakdance): Speedy enough to get you out of a jam, and enough knockback to set you up for some badass shffling.

Best Alternate Costume: Fire Flower Scheme

Overall: Buffed, Good

Character: Sonic
Status: Newcomer
Skill Level: Expert
Brawl Tier Prediction: Top

The one whose Smash appearance has been most desired dashes in from far away at supersonic speed.

Sonic the Hedgehog crashes headlong into battle!

Sonic is second only to Mario when it comes to iconic status in this game. The most requested character, his arrival is sure to create a huge buzz and please many fans. Although not very powerful, he is the fastest character in the game. He is hard to control, but it is well worth it. His dash dance is rivaled by no one so far, and his moves are dizzyingly quick. Although it's easy to avoid his neutral B, all of his spin dash moves have a satisfying contact about them. He is easy to combo with, and hard to take down once his momentum gets going. With his high speed and ability to turn entire matches with his final smash (Super Sonic), Sonic is easily a candidate for Top-Tier material when it comes to Brawl.

Final Smash: Super Sonic: Take control of Super Sonic. Just touching people is enough to send them flying! Beware of sensitive controls though...

Favorite Move: UpB (aka Spring Jump): Not only lifts you high, but can leave behind a useable spring for everyone to enjoy. Not only that, but Sonic can still airdodge OR do ANY attack afterward!

Notable: Dark Blue w/Red "Shadow" Scheme

Overall: Good

Character: Fox
Status: Veteran
Skill Level: Expert
Brawl Tier Prediction: High

Fox is just one of many so-called speed characters. His costume has been completely updated, so he’s full of fighting spirit.

Run! Fly! Move boldly! For such moves are the essence of Fox!

Fox represents an entire series: StarFox. Once the top-dog in Melee, he has been nerfed. Regardless of this fact, Fox is still one of the best characters available in the game. He's still quick, and he's still Fox. His waveshine isn't as good, and his laser has a determined distance now, even his Uair isn't as powerful, and STILL, Fox is great. That just goes to show how unbelievable he was in Melee.

Final Smash: Landmaster Tank: Take control of the Landmaster! Complete with barrel rolls. Shoot your laser at a foe for an almost guaranteed knockout. Be careful not to fall off the stage though...

Favorite Move: DownB (aka Reflector): Although not as good as before, the reflector is still a major part of Fox's armada. No pun intended.

Notable Alternate Costumes: "Wolf Tribute" Scheme

Overall: Nerfed, Good

Character: Diddy Kong
Status: Newcomer
Skill Level: Mid
Brawl Tier Prediction: Mid-High

Donkey Kong’s pal has finally joined the battle! Unfortunately, screenshots fail to truly capture the way he moves.

He scrambles around the battle, using whimsical fighting moves while wielding both his Rocketbarrel Boost and Peanut Pop Gun!

Diddy Kong was one of the most predictable additions to Brawl. He's iconic, and well-rounded. He was another one of the top-requested. One of his traits that is common in all games, is his speed. Brawl is no exception. His running attack is his signature cartwheel from Donkey Kong Country, and his DownB is to leave behind a banana peel! Quite handy. He's also got his peanut gun, which shoots farther and hits harder the more you charge it.No short-hop triple peanut, though, sorry.

Final Smash: Rocketbarrel Blast: Once you get a hang of the controls, this final smash is really good. You fly around and shoot peanuts at people. You can even eat the peanuts to restore health! Once again, be careful of sensitive controls though...

Favorite Move: ForwardB (aka Spider-Monkey): Diddy Kong runs toward the foe, jumps on him, and proceeds to maul his face. No kidding. Ricky Bobby would be proud.

Best Alternate Costume: Pink "Diddy" Scheme

Overall: Not Bad At All

Character: Samus
Status: Veteran
Skill Level: Mid
Brawl Tier Prediction: Mid-High (Due to ZSS)

Her name is Samus Aran. She joins us from the Metroid games.
Look at her Power Suit shine!

Her arm cannon is equipped with a variety of weapons.
Mastering all of them is the first step toward victory.

Ah, Samus. How I love you so. I used Samus a lot in both 64 and Melee, but I was never really fond of her cumberness. Sure, she had the power to make up for it, but I'm more of an instant gratification guy. Samus is a bit bigger in this game, but lighter, as all Brawl characters have proven to be. Her Fsmash is a lot quicker, but her charged shot is a bit weaker. Super missiles(Yes, the ones from Super Metroid), look super badass, but overall they have less knockback than seekers. Not to mention they hit upwards...in fact, most moves did. Anyways, her grapple beam is a lot quicker (good), but a lot shorter (bad). Samus has a lot of recovery potential, with tether recovery, bomb jumping, an improved upB, and the new airdodge. This is a major plus, and so is her improved Bair, which has a good KO ratio. And remember, the vertical knockback may not be a bad thing at all, with such aerial freedom. I can see Samus being really high up on the tiers if we find out how to effectively combo with her.

Final Smash: Zero Laser: Samus charges and fires a humongous charged shot that will send you flying and really rack up damage if you get caught in the midst of it. In fact, its so powerful, that her armor falls off!

Favorite Move: Dsmash (aka Breakdance): I can see this becoming a staple for combos in the future.

Notable Alternate Costumes: Tie between Fusion Suit and Phazon Suit.

Overall: Nerfed, Not bad at all

Character: Zero Suit Samus
Status: Newcomer
Skill Level: Mid-Expert
Brawl Tier Prediction: Mid-High

When Samus destroys her Power Suit, she’s left with the Zero Suit. What she’s lost in power and weaponry, she makes up for in speed!

Once she turns that Paralyzer in her hand into a whip, she has quite a long reach as well! Not exactly the straightforward fight you thought it was, huh?

Zero Suit Samus is the only exception to the barren field of representation from the Metroid series. One of the earliest announced newcomers, her form and availablity were right in front of our faces, but many refused to believe it until it was confirmed. She reminds me of Shiek in more than one way, and she's quick. I mean really quick. Her whip will beat you back and forth and shes got so much combo potential its ridonkulous. Seems that turning into ZSS isn't so much an unwanted sideaffect as much as its a sought after effect. So far, the only way to play as Zero Suit Samus is to use Samus, and then use her final smash. So what happens when you use ZSS's final smash? Yeah, I've got the answer...

Final Smash: Crystal Flash: ZSS floats in that sort of way that happens in video games when some sort of entity in the sky is either embibing you with powers, or taking something away from you. Or you're sacrificing yourself. You know what I mean...right? Anyways, she gains a protective aura that does some pretty serious damage to anyone who touches it and once the flash is done getting brighter, out comes Samus with her armor back.

Favorite Move: DownB (aka Shiek a la Houdini): ZSS flips up, teleports, and then reappears several feet from where she was before.

Best Alternate Costume: Black Zero Suit Scheme

Overall: Good

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Preview

Overall Impression:

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is amazing.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the most highly anticipated Wii game to date, and with good reason. The franchise, known for its maniacal frenzied mayhem, fluid gameplay, and deep mechanics, has brought gamers years of entertainment.

Masahiro Sakurai is the director yet again, and he can have his fame credited to the creation of gaming icon: Kirby.

Much like the Kirby series, Smash Bros. has a tendency to never get stale, and to get better and better the more you play. The original installment was meant to showcase the multiplayer capabilities of the N64. The Gamecube sequel, Super Smash Bros. Melee was available for its respective system's launch and maintained, incredibly, steady sales all the way into the release of this current generation's Nintendo console: Nintendo Wii.

Although announced prior as a game to showcase the ONLINE capabilities of multiplayer on Wii, work on Brawl began in October of 2005. We have recently learned, however, that this installment will feature an in-depth story mode, and it will also include co-op play.

The following things have been announced thus far that are new or worth mentioning to Smash Bros.:

-The Subspace Emissary (a deep story mode featuring 2 player co-op)
-Wi-Fi Play
-Final Smash Attacks
-Four Control Schemes (NGC, CC, Nunchuk+Remote, Remote)
-Variations of Crates/Barrels
-Combos Executed Through Holding of Normal Attack Button
-Havok Physics Sprinkled Throughout
-Personalized Controls w/Name Attachment
-Moving and Shooting
-New Assorted Items
-New Stages
-Assist Trophies
-Snapshots Anytime
-Footstool Jumps
-Stickers/Trophies
-Gliding
-Special Brawl
-My Music

and new characters so far:
-Diddy Kong
-Ike
-Lucas
-Meta Knight
-Pit
-Pokemon Trainer (Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard)
-Snake
-Sonic

-Wario
-Zero Suit Samus

Thursday and Friday I got the chance to play Brawl along with a ton of other people, and I can safely say it deserves the hype it has received so far. The characters available in the demo were Mario, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Link, Ike, Pit, Samus/Zero Suit Samus, Meta Knight, Fox, Pikachu and Sonic.

Note: ZSS wasn't selectable through the menu a la Shiek, and her Final Smash brings her armor back, just as predicted.

The Wii Remote and Classic Controller were the only control options available to us, and I was eager to try both. The Wii Remote was very simple and easy to use, but a little on the straining side when it came to grabbing, shielding, and moving. The D-pad is a little too stern, and it would probably take a lot of wear to get used to. In order to efficiently shield roll, I had to use my middle finger awkwardly to press the B button on the back of the remote, and then combine that effort with a quick tap to the side. Grabbing was mapped to the minus button and that was just a little out of the way. I'm sure with practice it would be very advantageous in its own right, but I was ready to move on to the Classic Controller after my first couple of matches.

The Classic Controller was much, much, easier to use. At first I was a bit thrown off, expecting the attack button to be A and the special attack button to be B, but its a little different. B was for normal attacks, and Y was for specials. X and A were for jumping. After playing a while it made sense, it felt right. The CC only had two problems: Grabbing and sensitivity. Grabbing was done primarily with the Zl and Zr buttons. If you own a CC you know how weird that is. Also, the controller felt a bit too sensitive, and I found myself accidentally jumping quite a bit. Anyways, C-Sticking is still available, and this time you can legitimately charge your attacks using it. Wavedashing is out, I tried it and literally fell over. Its almost like Sakurai implemented a way to prevent it from happening.

I was hankering for the other two options, because I'm efficient with the NGC and I plan on using the Remote+Nunchuk combo once the game comes out, if for no other reason than convenience. Either way though, once it is actually in our hands, all controls will be customizable, so it should all be peachy. No pun intended.

Overall, the game has clearly been balanced. Fox is still solid, but not the end-all be-all of characters anymore. Sonic and Meta Knight, the new top-tier material that were available were super-fast but also very vulnerable. Final Smashes solidify this fact by swaying matches back and forth single handedly. This should make the game more interesting, as the gaps between characters won't be so large this time as to make the meta-game consistently the same few characters. You should theoretically be able to choose anyone and still have a considerable chance of winning.

[More tomorrow, with specific character-related impressions]

PS- I want to announce now that the infamous Nintendrone/Kaizer is no longer running this blog. He's handed it over to me, and for the lack of a better alias, I'll just take over as Kaizer. He may still pop in once in a while, but for all intents and purposes, hes left this site. He wants to thank everyone once again for all their support and wish them the best of luck.

Back at ya, big guy.

Official "Brawl Demo Petition"

Click Here to Sign: Super Smash Bros. Brawl Demo Petition

To: Masahiro Sakurai, Nintendo

Although an online petition can do nothing more than make a great "want" noticeable, the cause here is worth it.

Nintendo, as a member of the Nintendo community and a fan of Super Smash Bros, I feel that a demo would be in order for the fans who reside in the United States: a demo of Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Nintendo Wii!

Fans have been excited about this game for almost two years and were sorely disappointed to learn of it's delay of February 10th of 2008. A demo would be the most ideal and perfect way to entertain and gain fans in this waiting period.

There are three main ways to distribute the demo:
1. Wii Ware: the wii could be used to download the demo
2. Nintendo Online Store: nintendo could charge a small fee and sell the Demo discs online.
3. Nintendo Power: All subscribing members would get the disc in the December edition of Nintendo Power! This would be the most ideal way. Members pay a fee for their subscription and this would be a perk for their support plus Nintendo Power's Sales would SKYROCKET.

Please consider this petition. I hope to see a result from this effort.

Sincerely, Luigitendo

Dear Masahiro Sakurai-san,

As I am sure you are very aware, your latest venture in the -Super Smash Bros.- franchise is easily the most anticipated worldwide release in the gaming industry. You are among the greatest gaming minds in the world, and we are grateful to have you in our midst. Although we are disappointed that you no longer work for Nintendo exclusively, we will continue to be loyal fans of ALL of your work.

Frankly, and obviously, the news of a delay of -Super Smash Bros. Brawl- has left us feeling weary, but we continue to wait patiently for its release. However...what we want, more than anything at the moment, is a demo. A playable demo available to ALL. Not just people who attend a sole convention in a city on one side of the world, not just to members of the press. It is the average person, who plays your game more joyfully and graciously than any other person in the world. Gamers, Mr. Sakurai, are your fans. While the press will pick and prod at your work simply to appear professional in the eyes of many, it is the GAMER, who awaits your game. Not with an intention to judge, but to simply enjoy. We feel that we deserve this, if for no other reason than we want it more than the people who received it.

It would be simple to do, would it not? Not only that, but wouldn't it be practical? It would surely boost sales. It would surely raise interest. The more people learn to enjoy this fantastic franchise of yours, the better.

Whether it be in download-able form, or material form, we, the fans of -Smash-, would like to play your game. Please take notice, sir, and please...remember the fans.

Sincerely,

Featuring intuitive touch-screen controls and innovative puzzles, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass offers new challenges for fans of the series and an easy-to-grasp introduction for gamers new to The Legend of Zelda.
